In a grim repeat of last week’s deadly attacks on law enforcement in Dallas, two police officers and a sheriff’s deputy are reported dead following an ambush in Baton Rouge.

Officials have confirmed three law enforcement officers have died and at least three others were injured during an early morning shooting on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway in Baton Rouge.

The mayor of Baton Rouge told MSNBC the scene was an ambush.

Speaking from the White House press briefing room, President Obama condemned the slayings of the law enforcement officers. “An attack on police is an attack on all of us,” he said.

Obama said we shouldn’t allow either the Baton Rouge killer or the Dallas killer to make us turn on each other.

“We have our divisions,” said Obama, “and they are not new. … Everyone, regardless of race, or political party, or profession – regardless of what organizations you are a part of – everyone, right now, focus on words and actions that can unite this country rather than divide it further. We don’t need inflammatory rhetoric. We don’t need careless accusations thrown around to score political points or advance an agenda. We need to temper our words and open our hearts. All of us.”

Gavin Eugene Long

The suspect who was killed has been identified as a black male named Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri, sources tell CBS News. He was born on July 17, 1987 and appears to have attacked police on his 29th birthday.

On July 8, Bill Johnson, executive director of the National Association of Police Organizations, said in an interview, “It’s a war on cops. And the Obama administration is the Neville Chamberlain of this war. … I think their continued appeasement at the federal level with the Department of Justice, their appeasement of violent criminals, their refusal to condemn movements like Black Lives Matter actively calling for the death of police officers, that type of thing, all the while blaming police for the problems of this country has directly led to the climate that has made Dallas possible.”
