New research from Austria suggests vitamin D supplementation may hold promise for people with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). In a randomized trial involving 35 women with FMS who had low serum vitamin D levels (<32 ng/mL), subjects were divided into two groups who received either a vitamin D supplement (cholecalciferol) or a placebo for twenty weeks.

Compared with the placebo group, there was a marked reduction in pain over the treatment period in the subjects given vitamin D. Subjects in the vitamin D group also had improved physical functioning as evaluated using the Short Form Health Survey 36, which assesses vitality, physical functioning, bodily pain, general health perceptions, physical role functioning, emotional role functioning, social role functioning and mental health. The study authors concluded that “this economical therapy with a low side effect profile may well be considered in patients with FMS.”
