Is Your Deodorant Giving You Painful Pit Rashes?

Lawsuits fly toward Old Spice deodorant

Is Your Deodorant Giving You Painful Pit Rashes?

An Alexandria Virginia man has recently filed a lawsuit against Proctor & Gamble (P&G) because he claims the company’s Old Spice deodorant caused painful red rashes under his arms.

Rodney Colley, whose angry-looking armpits are truly cringe-worthy, is inviting other consumers to follow his lead in an effort to create a class action.

Court papers list 13 Old Spice deodorant products, including Swagger, Classic Fresh and Pure Sport High Endurance, and deems them potentially “defective” and dangerous. The suit states:

“Deodorant is not intended to cause burning, rashes, irritation and other discomfort.”

It seems people will sue over every little thing these days, but don’t peg Colley as a sue-happy money grubber. The plaintiff says “hundreds, if not thousands” have been harmed by Old Spice deodorant.

The papers go on:

“Indeed, the problem is rampant, and rather than acknowledge the serious issue, Defendant is concealing it in order to continue selling the product and reaping windfall profits.”

There’s plenty of proof to back up his claim.

Court documents include Internet complaints made by Old Spice customers over the past 2 years, along with photos of raw, red armpits allegedly caused by the products. One commenter posted:

“My son has been using Old Spice Swagger Deodorant and has a rash in his armpit that is red and burning.”

Another customer wrote:

“I used the Old Spice pure sport and after a couple of days my underarms were raw. It burned so bad that I had to hold ice packs under my arms for a couple of days because of the burn.”

And yet another woman wrote on the Consumer Affairs website about her son’s painful experience:

“He showed them to me and I was horrified to see what looked like burns, he said his arms were so sore that he couldn’t even lift his arms above his head. We had to get Bactrim Cream for his pits and 2 weeks later [it is] finally starting to scab over.

My husband thought maybe our son was just sensitive to the product until the same thing happen [sic] to him 2 days later, my husband said he never felt so uncomfortable. He has to wear dress shirts to work and could hardly even move, because it would rub, it’s been about two weeks with his too and now finally starting to heal. This product needs to go away.”

Customers have come out of the woodwork to complain of chemical burns, blisters, and even bleeding. It appears that P&G has completely ignored the complaints since they started piling up in 2014.

P&G spokesman Damon Jones told USA Today:

“We go to great lengths to ensure our products are safe to use, and tens of millions of men use this product with confidence and without incident every year.

A small number of men may experience irritation due to alcohol sensitivity, a common ingredient across virtually all deodorant products. For men who have experienced a reaction to a deodorant, an antiperspirant may be a better option because they have a different formulation.”

Old Spice deodorant has an overall satisfaction rating of 1 star out of 5 on the Consumer Affairs website, and many of the customers complain of severe pain and burning after a single use.

Damon Jones says he is looking into the matter.

My advice is to purchase a quality and natural crystal stick or stone which will last you a very long time and is very safe in comparison to all chemical deodorants. You’ll find most expensive chemical deodorant brands cause problems with the armpits not just the skin but internal pain. Never use chemicals in this region because you’re hitting a prominent lymph node area.
