It is difficult to imagine that a grocery store chain would ban over half of the food products sold at Walmart. But that is exactly what Whole Foods does. Whole Foods grocery stores won’t sell any foods with ingredients listed on its banned ingredients list. (The list can be found here.)

Whole Foods’ Banned Ingredients

Whole Foods is one of the largest health-conscious grocery stores in America. It maintains a list of “Unacceptable Ingredients for Food.” The blacklist contains 78 ingredients, including some well-known villains such as aspartame, MSG, and high fructose corn syrup.

Slate magazine compared the list of ingredients banned by Whole Foods against food products offered at Walmart. They discovered the following:

“When all 78 ingredients banned by Whole Foods are taken into account, roughly 54 percent of food items sold at a Walmart would be prohibited at Whole Foods.”

Below are some charts published on Slate.com showing the percentage of products sold at Walmart stores with specific banned ingredients.

Grocery Cost Versus Value

The cost of groceries is a very important issue for most families. It affects where you can shop for your groceries. If you’ve been to both chains, it is definitely cheaper to shop at Walmart than at Whole Foods, but arguably only in the short term. Also, if you feed your body foods made with ingredients that are unhealthy, you are more likely to suffer from illness.

More importantly, many of these banned ingredients listed by Whole Foods are potentially toxic over time. Many would argue that the reason why there are some many cases of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer is due to poor quality of foods still permitted by the FDA.

Finally, remember that you can continue to shop wherever you buy your groceries. Even Walmart sells high-quality organic foods. Just, remember to read the ingredients. Additionally, there are many grocery chains that are working towards selling better quality groceries, such as ALDI. And of course, for a good part of each year there’s likely a growing farmer’s market in your community.
