If you've been watching the drama about the latest Obamacare round at the Supreme Court, especially if you've been worried, don't worry. Regardless of the decision that John Roberts or Anthony Kennedy makes, Obamacare is not going away. This whole situation is bogus-- a narrative to entertain and please different parties.

The main issue is whether it is acceptable for people to be registered through healthcare.gov, rather than through websites set up by individual states. The claim is that if people registered through the federal government's website instead of through a state website, they have not met the letter of the law. The big bad wolf threat is that they will lose their refund that makes health insurance affordable. It's not going to happen.

Here's why. All that states have to do is set up a state version or portal for the federal website and call it a state operation-- it would be like a franchise. It's simply a matter of labeling. The worst that people would have to do would be to re-register through the official state iteration of the healthcare.gov website. This is no big tech project.

Would states controlled by Republicans block this? That's highly unlikely. They've already bought into the program if people have access to the healthcare.gov site.

So, why is this meaningless exercise going on? It fits with the anti-Obamacare meme that has driven the Republicans to offer more than 50 bills to kill Obamacare. It allows the Democrats AND the Republicans to sell how important it is to get the "right" judges on the Supreme court.

The expectation is that if the five right wing SCOTUS corporatists rule against Obamacare, they'll make the decision take effect for 2016. That will give the states and healthcare.gov plenty of time to set the local "franchise" version of healthcare.gov in order.
