In the aftermath of the banking industry's meltdown, and similar problems in the food-safety industry and other government-regulated sectors, it's certain that increased regulation by the government is right around the corner. "In areas ranging from food safety to airlines to trade, increased government supervision is becoming acceptable to business as well as to voters," reported Business Week just days ago.
Business Week quotes Tom Gallagher, policy analyst at International Strategy & Investment: "We're moving in the direction of more regulation. The direction is locked in place. The only question now is magnitude."
The two agencies that regulate natural, independent health care products - the FDA and the FTC - are likely to be players in this regulatory surge. One way to make sure that these agencies are accountable, legal and balanced - perhaps the best way - is to protect honest employees within these agencies who expose government fraud and conflict of interest.
Right now, these employees have very little protection. As a result, employees who discover government wrongdoing risk their careers and retaliatory lawsuits if they come forward. Under these conditions, government agencies are able to operate behind closed doors, to our detriment.
Efforts are underway to change this, to protect Whistleblowers who are our first line of defense against government waste, fraud and conflict of interest. Your representatives in Washington, D.C. are considering important Whistleblower protections. And you must act quickly to make sure this law passes!
