Pressures To Wage War against Russia Remain Unabated

Writing for The Nation on July 30, Katrina vanden Heuvel and Stephen F.Cohen in their joint article, “Why Is Washington Risking War With Russia?” pointed out that not just the new Cold War, but plans to start an actual war between U.S.-led NATO and Russia around Ukraine is under way. “To promote this major escalation, the Obama administration is alleging, without firm evidence, that Russia is already firing artillery from its territory into Ukraine. Virtually unreported, however, is repeated Ukrainian shelling of Russia’s own territory, which killed a resident on July 13,” their Nation article said.
The authors also stated that in reality, Kiev has been Washington’s military proxy against Russia and its “compatriots” in eastern Ukraine for months. “Since the political crisis began, Secretary of State John Kerry, CIA Director John Brennan and Vice President Joseph Biden (twice) have been in Kiev, followed by senior U.S. defense officials, American military equipment and financial aid. Still more, a top U.S. Defense Department official informed a Senate committee that the department’s advisers are now embedded in the Ukrainian Defense Ministry,” the article noted.
In addition to what The Nation article said, LaRouchePAC reported earlier that Britain’s Prime Minister Cameron, in a letter to other NATO leaders and alliance Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen ahead of a summit in Britain next month, has proposed drafting a new schedule of military exercises, pre-positioning equipment and supplies, and enhancing the NATO Response Force of up to 25,000 troops.
It is also evident that Russia does not want to remain unprepared for such an eventuality. Itar-Tass, citing Col. Igor Klimov, a spokesman for the Russian Air Force, reported today that Russia has begun a five-day Air Force combat drills, which involve a total of over 100 fighter jets, bombers and helicopters in the country’s Central and Western military districts, and said the large-scale exercises would be conducted jointly with the Russian air-defense forces. “In all, the maneuvers will involve 100 planes and helicopters such as Su-27 Flanker fighter jets, MiG-31 Foxhound fighter jets, multipurpose Su-34 Fullback fighter-bombesr, Su-24 Fencer bombers as well as Mi-8, Mi-24 and Mi-28N combat helicopters,” Klimov said.
