The airstrikes against the Islamic State targeted oil installations in the terrorist group's de facto capital of Raqqa in northeastern Syria — killing nearly 20 people and freeing at least 150 detainees, according to activists.

U.S.-led airstrikes against ISIS hit oil installations in Syria, killing nearly 20 people Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, activists said.

The latest strikes come on the third day of an aerial campaign aimed at weakening the Islamic State's hold over the Middle Eastern country's oil fields, which are thought to be among the terrorists' primary streams of revenue.

The ruthless terrorist organization has been funding its operations by smuggling oil and selling it on the black markets after capturing the fields earlier this year, experts suspect.

The airstrikes hit at least four oil installations and three oil fields in the town of Mayadeen in the province of Deir el-Zour, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which gathers information from activists on the ground.

Two local activist groups and one group loyal to the terrorists corroborated this information.

Fearing further strikes, militants released at least 150 people from a prison in Raqqa, their de facto capital in northeastern Syria, according to activists.

The Observatory said at least 14 terrorists were killed and another five — likely the women and children of the militants — were killed near one of the refineries in the northeastern Hassakeh province. Some groups reported higher death tolls.
