It is perfectly human; old soldiers love to get their service medals on; to then parade so that we might remember their sacrifice in defeating Fascism. Presumably many served, which isn’t the same as fought in approximately 30 other British wars of aggression since 1945 but only the war against Fascism counts, sorry.

What is best forgotten is that most, rather than being volunteers were press ganged (conscripted). There was little need for their nail-biting anxieties; surprisingly few actually saw action.

I suppose they must take some credit; with the help of two other world empires they defeated one blockaded Central European country over which they had a 2.5 manpower advantage. This was added to by Allied unlimited access to all means of waging war; propaganda, military hardware, the assurance of unlimited rape and pillage, kangaroo courts; nooses, prison camps, chains and slavery. Yes, hats off, gentleman.

You were rewarded. Apart from the king’s shillin’ there was your demob suit and severe austerity that lasted twice as long as your war. Fast forward and you are much more impoverished than the lands you helped to ruin and pillage seventy years ago. Maybe it should be called a dumb mob suit?

Do they hand out medals for murder, rape, slavery, pillage, black-marketing, corruption, bluster and lies? Perhaps the Sicktoria Cross or the Gorge Medal?

You left a lot of pals out there somewhere, soldier. This was just as well; their humble little homes were needed for non European immigrants. Well, you didn’t really believe a German family would wish or need to live in one of them did you? No, no one could be that dumb.

You defeated a country of full employment and became unemployed. You overcame a people that wanted for little and ended up with your pockets hanging out. You crushed a country where people enjoyed a crime free environment. You were rewarded with inner cities resembling war zones; where your children can no longer roam free of fear.

If you were conscripted to defend your way of life; fail. Did you endure hardship to defend democracy? Fail. Hitler was the only democratically elected leader of the four main belligerent nations. Did you make sacrifices to free Europe? Fail. Eleven Eastern European nations and their peoples were signed over to Stalin’s tyranny. Their war, suffering and loss of freedom was to go on and on for another forty-five years. Fail.

You were rewarded with a ‘free Press’. Here is a challenge. Find in it a single authenticated political expression of belligerency made by Hitler’s Germany against your country prior to it being attacked. Look to see if you can find evidence of German war material designed for other than defensive purpose. Equally difficult to find in your so-called free press images of life in Germany up until you declared war on it. Enjoy your defeat.
