More than 500 people joined the protest, many carrying placards

Barriers were torn down and riot police were brought in to control the 500-plus demonstrators as tempers flared.

Palestinians and their supporters waved flags and placards and chanted: "Five, six, seven, eight - Israel is a terror state."

Among the protestors at the embassy, in High Street Kensington, was Gamal Hamed whose 23-year-old son still lives in Gaza.

Mr Hamad said: "Yesterday was the bloodiest day in my homeland's history. We will do what we can to make the world take notice."

He added: "I am delighted by the number of people who have pledged their support today - we are all worried about where the conflict goes from here."

Over the past day, Palestinians have reported at least 20 different raids on their territory in which hundreds of people have been killed.

Israel says the raids follow dozens of missile attacks on its citizens by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

International pressure has been mounting on the two sides to cease hostilities.
