IRAQI LAWMAKER: 'SAVE US! SAVE US!

An Iraqi parliament member who belongs to the Yazidi sect under siege by the Islamic State jihadist group broke down in tears as she pleaded with colleagues for help, warning that her people face imminent destruction.
“We are being slaughtered, annihilated,” Yazidi MP Vian Dakhil declared, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute.
“An entire religion is being wiped off the face of the Earth. Brothers, I am calling out to you in the name of humanity!” she said. “In the name of humanity, save us! Mr. Speaker, I want to. … ”
She then burst into tears.
Tens of thousands of Yazidi members are trapped on Mount Sinjar in Iraq without food and water. With summertime temperatures nearing 100, they are dying of thirst.
If they choose to descend, they face being killed by Islamic State fighters, formerly the ISIS, which has taken control of vast swaths of Iraq, eliminating anyone who won’t join them, particularly Christians and other non-Muslims.
There are now are only a handful of Christians, if any, left in Mosul, where believers have lived for two millennia.
Dakhil’s pleas were broadcast this week, MEMRI reported.
She began with: “In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Honorable Presidential Council, colleagues, representatives of the Iraqi people.”
The speaker said, “MPs, you can show solidarity with her by standing in your places.”
“I am standing here not in order to deliver a speech to the Iraqi people, but in order to convey the bitter reality of the Yazidis currently in Mount Sinjar. Mr. Speaker, under the slogan of ‘There is no god but Allah,’ 500 Yazidi boys and men have been slaughtered up to now.”
She continued: “Mr. Speaker, our women are being taken captive and sold on the slave-market. … Please, brothers. … Please, brothers. … A genocide campaign is taking place right now against the Yazidis.”
Reminded to “stick to the communiqué,” she said, “Yes, Mr. Speaker, I am sticking to the communiqué. … I beg you, Mr. Speaker, my people are being slaughtered, just like all the Iraqis were slaughtered: Shiites, Sunnis, Christians, Turkmens, and the Shabak people. Today, the Yazidis are being slaughtered.
“Brothers, despite all the political disagreements, we want human solidarity. I speak in the name of humanity. Save us! Save us! For the past 48 hours, 30,000 families have been besieged on Mount Sinjar, without food or water. They are dying. Seventy children have died so far of thirst and suffocation. Fifty elderly people have died because of the deteriorating conditions. Our women are being taken captive and sold on the slave-market.
“Mr. Speaker, we call upon the Iraqi parliament to intervene immediately to stop this massacre. The Yazidis suffered 72 genocides, and it is being repeated in the 21st century.”
The Daily Mail in the U.K. reported the plight of the Yazidi, noting some 40,000 face starvation after being forced into hiding on a barren mountain top by Islamic State jihadists.
The Mail quoted Marzio Babille, the Iraq representative for the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF.
‘There are children dying on the mountain, on the roads,” Babille said. “There is no water, there is no vegetation, they are completely cut off and surrounded by the Islamic State. It’s a disaster, a total disaster.’”
ISIS had issued an ultimatum to the Yazidi community to convert to Islam, pay a religious fine, flee their homes or face death. The people fled.
Yazidis are described as followers of an ancient religion with links to Zoroastrianism.
Their plight also captured the attention of the Washington Post, which reported humanitarian agencies estimated between 10,000 and 40,000 people were trapped.
Displaced families have had to bury their young and elderly victims in shallow graves on the rocky mountainside, covering the bodies with stones, the Post said. Iraqi government planes, according to the paper, attempted to airdrop bottled water Monday night, but few of the refugees were reached.
