US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has questioned why Pakistan has not been able to keep tabs on al-Qaeda leaders

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has questioned why Pakistan has not been able to keep tabs on al-Qaeda leaders.

Speaking to journalists in Lahore, she said she found it "hard to believe" nobody in the Pakistan government knew where they were.

Mrs Clinton has been in Pakistan for two days in an effort to strengthen US ties with the government and shore up the fight against militants.

During her press conference she was asked why Pakistan was being seen as the centre of al-Qaeda terrorism.

She said as far as she knew the masterminds of the al-Qaeda terrorist syndicate had been living in Pakistan safe havens since 2002.

She said to a Pakistani journalist: "I find it hard to believe that nobody in your government knows where they are and couldn't get them if they really wanted to. Maybe that's the case; maybe they're not gettable. I don't know."

Mrs Clinton had earlier had a lively discussion with university students in Lahore.

She acknowledged there was still a "trust deficit" toward the United States in Pakistan because of past policies.

But she said she was working to change that by reaching out to ordinary Pakistanis.

Mrs Clinton will now travel to the Middle East to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
