US searching for 'radicalized' Americans

The number is not thought to be large, but Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson says a "nightmare scenario" would be if people holding U.S. passports receive terrorist training then return legally to the U.S. to commit acts of violence.

She said in a speech to the Pacific Council Friday in Los Angeles that the U.S. is working with Pakistan and other governments to figure out how to identify such people.

She said after the speech that "there are more out there than we know about" but there is no reliable estimate of how many.

Five American Muslims from the Washington, D.C., area who were arrested in Pakistan last year are facing possible terrorism charges in that country.

They were reported missing by their families in November.
