eeship Council may be transformed into an "Interfaith Dialogue Council." Ban Ki-moon appeared to have laid the groundwork for such an eventuality during his October 13 press conference when he stated, " I think, very desirable, therefore, to engage in dialogue. We need to have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the history and ideology of other, different cultures. That is why the United Nations has been holding many conferences and special meetings among the different cultures and interfaith dialogue. And, as the Secretary-General, I’ll try always to encourage that kind of dialogue among different cultures."

On February 5, 1999, Sun Myung Moon, the head of Korean intelligence- and organized crime-funded Unification Church, called for the establishment of a new UN body that would concentrate on religious dialogue to bring about "world peace." On that issue, the two Moons appear to be on the same page. Meanwhile, Sun Myung Moon continues to expand his influence, especially in the Pacific region and particularly in Tonga, Fiji, Marshall Islands, New Zealand, and Indonesia. The Moonie influence over the small Pacific islands has also been evident in their support for Guatemala for a UN Security Council seat. Venezuela, unlike Guatemala, restricts the activities of the Unification Church. Moonie organizations in Latin America, including the Tiempos del Mundo newspaper, have adopted extremely anti-Chavez stances.
