21 Coptic Christians were beheaded by ISIS terrorists in February, putting Christian persecution, which has been going on for decades in the Middle East, on the world media’s radar screen.

An organization representing the sentiments of more than a quarter-million Americans is asking the nation’s new U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, to urge the global body to launch a campaign to protect Christians and other religious minorities from the “wholesale destruction” intended by Islamic terrorists in the Middle East.

“It is imperative that the United Nations formally recognize that the ongoing atrocities committed by ISIS against Christians, Yazidis, and other religious and ethnic minorities in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere constitute genocide for purposes of implicating the obligations of the international community pursuant to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and the well-established responsibilities to protect the victims of genocide,” says a letter to Haley from the American Center for Law and Justice.

“While we call for swift and decisive action by the international community to stop the genocide and protect the victims, we are also aware that the first step is for the United Nations to formally recognize that the atrocities constitute genocide, and to recognize all those victimized, thereby, including Christians,” the letter says.

“ISIS’ systematic pattern of widespread murder and sexual abuse has forced thousands of Christians and other religious minorities to feel from Iraq and Syria. These acts are leading to the wholesale destruction of Christians as a group in the region.”

ACLJ, which collected the signatures of nearly 280,000 people in support of its effort, warns that the ISIS bloodbath “will only end with U.S. and global leaders recognizing what is happening AND acting to end it.”

It’s just one of the failures of the United Nations that is driving a growing movement to urge the United States to stop funding the global body. Some want the U.S. to exit the U.N. and expel its headquarters from American soil.

The Big List of leaders calling for the U.S. to take action against the U.N. has been growing since late last year when its Security Council issued yet another statement condemning U.S. ally Israel.

There is even a petition calling for the U.S. to make a definitive move against the U.N. and its far-left agenda.

A U.S. departure would be a major blow to the U.N., as more than 22 percent of its budget comes from the U.S.

On Jan. 25, WND reported that the White House was considering executive orders that would dramatically reduce U.S. funding to the U.N. and potentially result in U.S. withdrawal from certain multilateral treaties.

And in the halls of Congress, a bill, the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2016, sponsored by Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., would also address the problem.

It would remove the United States from the U.N., ban any continued financial support, bar American military members from serving under U.N. command and remove the diplomatic immunity of U.N. officials.

The newest fight, over the U.N.’s inaction to protect Christians, prompted ACLJ to hand-deliver the letter to Haley.

“It is vital that the United Nations stand against the evils of the ongoing genocide and use all available options to halt the genocide and protect the victims,” the letter says.

“The charter of the United Nations demands no less, and through the organs of the United Nations, equipped and empowered by the Genocide Convention, the United Nations has the unique capability to end the genocide and protect the Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities.”

It continues, “The United Nations Human Rights Council’s 34th Session which has just begun presents a perfect opportunity for your office to signal the United States’ newfound resolve to stop ISIS’s genocide once and for all,” the letter told Haley.

ISIS’s bloody violence in the Middle East has horrified the world. Jihadists have beheaded, blown up, drowned burned and crucified opponents, often making videos to instill terror in anyone who stands in the way of their aim to create a state ruled by Islamic law.

Recently, at least seven Christians have been killed in Arish, in Egypt’s North Sinai province.

And the BBC reported the killing of Christians in the Syrian town of al-Qaryatain.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry last year conceded that ISIS is committing genocide.

“In my judgment, [ISIS] is responsible for genocide against groups in territory under its control, including Yazidis, Christians and Shia Muslims,” Kerry said then.
