President Trump said the GOP will try to pull it’s August convention out of North Carolina.

The move comes after Democratic Governor Roy Cooper refused to guarantee that Covid-19 capacity restriction would not affect the convention.

“Had long planned to have the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, a place I love. Now, [North Carolina Governor] Roy Cooper and his representatives refuse to guarantee that we can have use of the Spectrum Arena - Spend millions of dollars, have everybody arrive, and then tell them they will not be able to gain entry. Governor Cooper is still in Shelter-In-Place Mode, and not allowing us to occupy the arena as originally anticipated and promised,” Trump tweeted.

“Would have showcased beautiful North Carolina to the World, and brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, and jobs, for the State. Because of the [North Carolina Governor], we are now forced to seek another State to host the 2020 Republican National Convention”, he continued.

Republicans will have several options for re-location. Generally, conventions will be hosted in a swing state the party is looking to win in the election. They would make one likely candidate the front runner for the convention: Nevada.

Hillary Clinton defeated Trump 47.92%-45.5% in 2016. Additionally, Las Vegas has ample accommodations for a convention and has been devastated by coronavirus. To add to the pain, casinos and the hospitality/tourism industry could be one of the last to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

By taking the convention to Las Vegas, Trump and the GOP could build significant goodwill with voters they desperately need to win. Not to mention, Nevada has two Democratically-held congressional seats the GOP lost in 2016 that could be tilted back to red.

Other smart locations would be Michigan and Pennsylvania, both states Trump narrowly won in 2016.

The Democrats plan to hold their convention in Milwaukee, WI mid-August. In 2016, the Clinton campaign thought they had Wisconsin in the bag and ignored the state in the last run-up to election day. Trump ended up narrowly upsetting Hillary Clinton by less than a percentage point in the Badger State.
