Green New Deal Leader Losing Reelection By Double Digits

In a sign of just how politically poisonous Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” may be, a new poll shows its Senate cosponsor is losing his re-election bid by 17 percent – in the Democrat primary.

A Change Research poll shows Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, who has made radical environmentalism his decades-long cause and is publicly aligned with Ocasio-Cortez, is losing the Democrat primary for his seat by 17 percent to Congressman Joe Kennedy.

The poll shows him getting just 25 percent for his own seat, with Kennedy garnering 42 percent.

Markey has cruised to election victories as a Congressman and Senator for 43 years. He won the seat in 2013 by double digits and was re-elected in 2014 with 62 percent of the vote. He is endorsed by fellow Senator Elizabeth Warren and has the backing of over 100 Democrat state legislators.

While the Kennedy name is powerful, it’s not enough to explain the total collapse of his support. The only thing that’s changed for Markey in the last several months is his very public alliance with Ocasio-Cortez and the “Green New Deal.”

The poll also shows if the state’s Republican governor Charlie Baker were to be the GOP nominee he would hold a one percent lead over Markey. Markey was re-elected in 2014 with 62 percent of the vote.

In another sign of just how toxic environmentalism is among Democrats, a 2016 effort to pass a “carbon tax” in Washington state went down in flames with 60 percent of voters rejecting it, at the same time 60 percent of voters voted for Hillary Clinton for president.
