STATES BAN TOGETHER TO STRIP OBAMA OF HIS POWER
In November of 2014, President Obama changed immigration laws when he unilaterally created and implemented the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans act. The measure basically granted amnesty to illegal immigrant parents with children born in the United States.
Texas led in the opposition of the measure, and they won an injunction in federal district court that was upheld by a circuit appeals court. Now, 26 of our 50 states are preparing to push back against Obama in the Supreme Court, led by Attorney General Ken Paxton, who filed a brief this week.
“The Obama Administration has consistently demonstrated disregard for the rule of law in asserting that it has the legal authority to unilaterally change the immigration policy of the United States,” Paxton argued in a statement. “Rewriting national immigration law requires the full and careful consideration of Congress, not the political will and assertion of one person.”
“As the president himself said numerous times, he alone does not have the authority to grant millions of unauthorized aliens a host of benefits,” the statement continued. “Including work authorization.”
The 99-page brief goes on to argue that Obama’s actions place an “undue economic burden” on the states, forcing them to issue drivers licenses and other benefits to individuals in the country illegally. It also asserts that Obama violated the Administrative Procedure Act by announcing monumental changes without the input of Congress or comments from the public.
