WeAreChangeOklahoma - Biometrics Battle

We Are Change Oklahoma talks to Mark Lerner, a nationally recognized biometrics expert. We discuss the reasons why the international biometric system of identification and control should be rejected and dismantled. To that end, Kaye Beach has taken up a personal battle against biometric identification in Oklahoma. Her first reaction to Real ID was an instinctive one but after several years of studying the scheme and biometric identification in general, she has come to oppose it intellectually, practically, philosophically, morally and spiritually as well. On September 21, 2011 her Attorneys at Echols and Associates in conjunction with the Rutherford Institute filed suit against the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. The time to resist this international control system is now!

India Begins Bio Metric ID Of 1.2 Billion People 2011

India has launched a programme to allocate a Unique Identification Number (UID) to each of its 1.2 billion residents.

The number will be linked to three core pieces of biometric data, including a photo of the face, 10 digit fingerprints and iris scans of both eyes. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will start to register people this month with a view to identifying 600 million people over four years.

Although it is not obligatory to get an UID, a number of social services and some banks will require people to have one. If the programme is successful it will be the first biometrically verified universal ID used on a national scale.

The UIDAI was launched in 2002 to help eliminate corruption linked to social welfare support offered to people living below the poverty line. Existing identity databases in India are fraught with problems of fraud and ghost beneficiaries, with support often not going to those who need it the most.

Agencies in both the public and private sector in India usually require a clear proof of identity to provide services. Since the poor often lack such documentation, they face barriers in accessing benefits and subsidies. The new ID technology aims to give every person in India the opportunity to access state support.

The universal identification will make for easier transfer of migrant workers between states, and drivers will not have to seek licenses from others states when they move around the country, because their information will be held centrally.

The UIDAI has tried to placate people with privacy concerns by pointing out that the UID is just a number, not an ID card. Each state will have responsibility for issuing licenses and ID cards which will reference the UID but may not contain biometric data or other personal information.
