The Man in the Middle (with video)

Vaclav Klaus, the President of the Czech Republic is the man that stands between Europe and ratification of the European Union's Lisbon Treaty. Klaus openly remarked that the European Union and its hierarchical structure is little more than a re-visioned form of Communism, a statement that shook the very foundations of the still developing institution. Klaus holds firm to the notion that global warming is a Trojan horse of this communistic ideology and has even written a book about it called "Blue Planet in Green Shackles". He now sees himself as the sole guardian of freedom for the people of Europe as he alone, due to the Czech constitution, has the authority to refuse ratification.

Earlier in the month Ireland, whose constitution required a public referendum, ratified the Lisbon Treaty in the second go-round, the result of a European Union forced vote. The question in regards to Ireland is why was it's initial 'no' vote not seen as legitimate? It makes one wonder why there was a second vote at all? In the wake of Ireland's recent ratification a chorus of voices is proclaiming 'fraud' to the Lisbon Treaty vote, highlighting various irregularities. One prominent dissident voice is that of Britain's UKIP leader Nigel Farage who points out that Ireland's broadcasters provided 70% of their coverage to the 'yes' side, a 'yes' side whose campaign out spent the 'no' side by a 10-1 margin. He likened the campaign to a pea shooter against a barrage of heavy artillery.

Vaclav Klaus has come under heavy fire since his 'euroskepticism' was made public, and as can be seen in the second interview below, Nigel Farage is not handled lightly either. It's apparent to an objective observer of the situation that the weight of the European media is heavily in favour of Lisbon ratification, as can be witnessed by a hit piece in the Telegraph which worked Vaclav Klaus into a damnable figure of no redeeming quality. Yet this damnable figure is hugely popular in the Czech Republic being voted into office on multiple occasions while simultaneously raising the ire of Western Europe with his increasing closeness to a re-emergent Russia.

In the latest turmoil Vaclav Klaus has refused to take any calls from European Union officials and has instead flown to Russia to promote his new book. At least that's the cover story. I have the inclination to believe that Klaus understands well that if he ratifies the Lisbon Treaty it will prove to be the end of Czech sovereignty for good and that he has no intentions of letting that happen. Klaus who fears the European Unions encroachment into all aspects of Czech social life is orienting himself towards Russia, a cultural relative, who he sees as the exit strategy of choice. Whether he prevails or not remains to be seen, but time will tell.

The first video is an interview from 2008 hosted by Glenn Beck with Vaclav Klaus as guest. In this short exchange we get a sense of the man and his position regarding Communism, Russia and America. He also, I'm pleased to say, provides a demarcation between the American Revolution and the French Revolution, something I discuss in my most recent newsletter.
