Anarchy vs. Minarchy
I was intending to send a link to a recent radio show I was on, along with some follow-up comments. A few days ago I was on Jan Helfeld's radio show, and we had a debate of sorts, lasting nearly two hours. Jan is a minarchist, who wants a small, "limited" government, and--as you probably all would expect by now--I was arguing against even that amount of authoritarianism.
I should say, despite the rather heated debate we had on his show, I still very much appreciate what Jan does, in terms of putting high-profile tyrants on the spot. When it comes to 99% of what is done in the name of "government," I think Jan and I would agree that it's bad. Nonetheless, as you can hear on the show, there is an underlying principle on which we disagree, from which all tyranny grows (the supposed "necessity" of state coercion for the supposed good of society). To hear the show, look down the left side of the following page to find a link to "PLAY" the 9/6/2009 edition of the Jan Helfeld show:

Now, I had INTENDED to add some additional thoughts here regarding the show. Then, somewhat by coincidence, I found that I didn't need to, because someone else had. I stumbled on the following video, which was a follow-up by Stefan Molyneux regarding HIS debate with Jan Helfeld. It applied so precisely to my own debate with Mr. Helfeld (when I hadn't yet heard the Molyneux vs. Helfeld debate), that I don't really feel the need to add anything. So here is "my" follow-up ... even though I didn't write it, and it's not even about the show I was on, though it's still as appropriate as can be:
