Emanuel Should Clean Chicago Before Accepting Migrant Minors

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, like his former boss, Barack Obama, much prefers moral posturing to actual accomplishments.

Displays of compassion are graded on softer scale, like gymnastics at the Olympics, where political orientation and the ability to emote can result in a higher score.

Competence, on the other hand, is not graded on the curve and the penalty for failure can be painful at the ballot box.

Something else former boss Obama may experience this November.

Which brings us to Mayor Emanuel’s latest.

Kellan Howell, of the Washington Times, writes the mayor has weighed in on the situation at the southern border, seeing an opportunity for favorable publicity. “The influx of unaccompanied child migrants is a growing humanitarian crisis that we can no longer ignore,” Emanuel said. “While we have our own challenges at home, we cannot turn our backs on children that are fleeing dangerous conditions,” Emanuel added.

His Honor wants to import 1,000 of the minors by the end of 2014, but there is no word if the youngsters will be accompanied by three or four thousand other illegals claiming to be part of a constantly fluctuating extended family.

As for the minors, “fleeing dangerous conditions”, it looks like a case of jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Chicago isn’t exactly the city of brotherly love (neither is Philadelphia for that matter).

As recently as July 26th, 13 Chicago residents were shot in a single night and one of the wounded was a 3–year–old.

The next night another six residents were wounded in a variety of shootings and stabbings.

For minors fleeing gang violence in Central America, traveling thousands of miles to encounter gang violence in a strange setting, surrounded by strangers does, not appear to be much of an improvement.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for the mayor to concentrate on making Chicago neighborhoods safer for minor citizens of his own city?

After all, that’s whom he is supposed to be representing in the mayor’s office.

On the other hand this performance is actually is a great opportunity for a Republican mayor of a safer locale — say Oklahoma City or Anchorage — to offer Chicago families with minors a safe place to live in the future — with lower taxes to boot.

For Mayor Emanuel his quip that a crisis is too important to go to waste is biting him in the behind now that he is mayor and not just another paid advisor.

Chicago murder rates are higher than both New York and Boston, both of which are larger cities.

He has an election coming up next February and he may well discover that political posturing doesn’t carry much weight with voters looking for mayoral competence.
