Recess Appt. Of Judge Pickering Is Shameful And Divisive !!!
One short day after claiming to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President Bush made a mockery of any commitment to justice and fairness by using a recess appointment to install Judge Charles Pickering on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Judge Pickering's extremist views on reproductive rights, women's rights and civil rights are far outside America's mainstream. As a judge, he has demonstrated vast hostility toward victims of gender and other types of discrimination. His record raises serious doubts that he would apply the law in a fair and even- handed manner.
Judge Pickering is a bad and dangerous choice to serve on the Appeals court, where judges may re-interpret Roe v. Wade, redefine affirmative action programs and sexual harassment laws, and narrow Congress' ability to guarantee important civil rights protections.
With this appointment, the President is undermining the will of the Senate and flouting the wishes of the American people. Judge Pickering's recess appointment to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals will expire in 2005. No Senator should vote to give him a lifetime appointment at that time. This action is shameful and divisive.
