The watchdog group Judicial Watch has filed a House Ethics complaint against Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., calling for a congressional investigation of allegations she married her brother in an immigration-fraud scheme.

As WND reported, investigative reporter David Steinberg and others have published over the past three years substantial evidence that Omar married her brother to defraud U.S. immigration and perjured herself eight times in her divorce statement. In addition, a Minnesota state agency last month fined her for filing joint tax returns with a man who was not her husband while legally married to a man who appears to be her brother.

“The evidence is overwhelming Rep. Omar may have violated the law and House rules,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The House of Representatives must urgently investigate and resolve the serious allegations of wrongdoing by Rep. Omar.”

Fitton encouraged Americans “to share their views on Rep. Omar’s apparent misconduct with their congressmen.”

The complaint calls on the Office of Congressional Ethics to launch an immediate investigation into Omar’s conduct.

WND reported the local daily newspaper that has provided enthusiastic coverage of Omar, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, says the congresswoman has been uncooperative with attempts to resolve the accusation.

Meanwhile, Omar was asked Tuesday at a conference for Muslim Americans in politics to condemn female genital mutilation, or FGM.

She called the question “appalling,” saying she’s “disgusted” to be asked if she condemns “al-Qaida,” “FGM” and “Hamas,” saying it’s a “waste” of time.

“I am, I think, quite disgusted I think to be honest that as Muslim legislators, we are constantly being asked to waste our time speaking to issues that other people are not asked to speak to because the assumption exists that we somehow support and are for [the issue],” Omar told the audience.

“So I want to make sure that the next time someone is in an audience and is looking at me and (U.S. Rep.) Rashida (Tlaib) and Abdul (El-Sayed, a candidate for Michigan governor) and (Virginia Delegate) Sam (Rasoul) that they ask us the proper question that they would probably ask any member of Congress, any legislator, any politician,” she said.

Breaches of law and ethics code

Judicial Watch said in the complaint that perjury, immigration fraud, marriage fraud, state and federal tax fraud and federal student loan fraud are violations that would breach the Code of Ethics for Government Service.

The findings of Steinberg, Preya Samsundar and Powerline’s Scott Johnson, Judicial Watch said, are “supported by information gathered from public records, social media postings, genealogy databases, computer forensic analysis, unaltered digital photographs, discussions between the investigative reporters and the subjects of the investigation themselves, and information supplied by confidential sources within the Somali-American community.”

The investigative reporters believe Omar married her biological brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a citizen of the United Kingdom, in 2009, as part of an immigration fraud scheme. She divorced him in 2017 after the claim that Elmi is her brother arose during her run for office. Records indicate that during the time she was married to Elmi, she lived with the father of her children, Ahmed Hirsi, whom she described as her husband according to her “faith tradition.”

In her application for divorce in 2017, she swore under penalty of perjury, among that, other things, she had had no contact with Ahmed Nur Said Elmi after June 2011 and didn’t know where to find him.

However, evidence, including now deleted social media posts, compiled by Steinberg and others indicates she not only had contact with Elmi but also met with him.

The apparent immigration fraud scheme, Judicial Watch said, also may have helped Elmi obtain federally backed student loans for his attendance at North Dakota State University.

The State of Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board already has determined that Omar violated state campaign finance laws for improper use of campaign funds. She was forced to reimburse her campaign thousands of dollars.

More significantly, Judicial Watch said, the board discovered she filed joint tax returns with Hirsi in 2014 and 2015 while she was legally married to Ahmed Elmi.
