There have been a number of folks, including conservatives in the media, who should know better than to make the speculations and criticism that we’ve heard in recent days. Donald Trump is now the president of the United States. In that capacity, he is not running a private business, and hence his leadership approach must change from what he and the rest of us are accustomed to.

In other words, the Republicans in Congress are not going to respond in the same way as his employees did. In fact, given the obstructionist attitude some of them display, were they in his business structure, no doubt they would have been fired some time ago. In spite of his difficulties with a few Republican senators, he looks to be on the verge of fulfilling another one of his campaign promises.

President Trump is now only two Senate votes short of repealing and replacing Obamacare. This is good news for the nation, since whatever your political beliefs, it’s clear that thing is not working and that it will eventually crash on its own. Even some Democrats have reluctantly had to agree with that.

“Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana told reporters Friday morning that his bill to replace Obamacare is only two votes shy of passing the Senate.

“‘I am pretty confident we’ll get there on the Republican side,’ Cassidy told reporters Friday. ‘We’re probably at 48-49 and talking to two or three more.

“Cassidy, along with GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Dean Heller of Nevada and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, released legislation Wednesday to repeal and replace major portions of Obamacare with a system of block grants, a first step towards making good on a seven-year Republican campaign promise.”

Having Senator Graham on-board is a good sign as when it comes to the president’s initiatives, he seems to prefer the Democrat’s stand on the issues more than the president’s all too often.

And we’re not that far from one year into President Trump’s term, so the fact that the Republican majority has not been able to get its act together on what is a vital national issue should be an embarrassment for them, as well as a motivator to get the job done.

“Republicans seven month long effort to upend the American health care system failed in late July, after three Republican senators – John McCain of Arizona, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine – shot down the party’s third and final (until now) proposal to repeal Obamacare in a contentious 49-51 vote.

“Senators have roughly 10 legislative days left for pushing legislation through reconciliation, which requires only 50 yes votes and allows leadership to bypass Democratic filibusters.”

Getting this done in 10 days would be considered something of a miracle given the snail’s pace at which the Senate typically works. And then there is Senate Majority Leader McConnell who is short on leadership skills.

“Republican leadership in the Senate has not thrown its support behind the measure just yet. Graham told reporters Wednesday at the Capitol that McConnell has told him to get to 50, and, at the point, he may decide to move forward with the legislation.

“The South Carolina senator publicly called out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, saying that the only thing stopping this bill from getting to the floor of the Senate is lack of leadership.”

No bill is going to be perfect, yet if this one addresses the problems that are causing Obamacare to become a failure, then it’s time to pass it. It’s also time for a victory for the president. Unless this bill has serious flaws, McConnell needs to lead for a change and get the bill passed.

If House Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell cannot move legislation forward, then they are detriments to the Republican Party and dead weight around the president’s neck. That being the case, it is time for them to either perform or be replaced.
