Dire Warning from Democratic Senator: Resolution Has Rewritten U.S. Constitution
Mitch McConnell’s new AUMF bill is proving to be a glorified war clause. This bill could allow the president to declare international, martial law. It’s not just the war on ISIS that would use this clause to it’s advantage, it could also give the government the power to declare war on the people of the United States.
Chris Murphy, a democratic senator, is speaking out against the bill and the harm it has the potential of causing the law-abiding people of the United States. The Authorization for Use of Military Force is meant to target ISIS, wherever it may be. Unfortunately for most of the worlds population, ISIS and ISIS supporters can be found all over the globe and this bill will give American soldiers the ability to enter any country, without opposition, and with little to no rules to abide by. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy warned Congress to not approve Mitch McConnell’s AUMF bill.
“This resolution is a total rewrite of the War Powers clause of the Constitution. Let’s be clear about that,” Democrat Senator Chris Murphy said on the Senate floor last week in regards to S.J. Res. 29, a bill purporting to give the sitting US president the power to declare war on ISIS.
“It is essentially a declaration of international martial law,” Murphy said.

“A sweeping transfer of military power to the president that will allow him or her to send US troops almost anywhere in the world for any reason with absolutely no limitations,” Sen. Murphy described, adding that Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the Constitution “vests in Congress the responsibility to declare war.”

Murphy went on: “It gives the power to the president without consulting Congress to deploy US forces in anyone of the 61 countries where ISIS has a single sympathizer.”
The Senator from Connecticut also warned the bill could possibly give the president the power to deploy troops on US soil:
“Well as we’ve seen here in the United States, the threat of ISIS is present in virtually every corner in the world. Thus this resolution would give the president total absolute carte blanche to send our young soldiers to any corner of the world without consulting Congress.”

Senator Murphy is correct on all counts, as any sane person would seek to deny granting this or any future sitting President with the power to declare and prosecute any war he or she wanted. There is too much at stake and the AUMF bill must be quashed before it passes. Our republic demands it.
