The CIA's mission is to uncover and collect intelligence information in foreign countries, which is useful to the U.S. government. The information is then analysed and presented to those in the U.S. government involved in making national security decisions, such as the President and the National Security Advisor. The CIA also engages in covert actions (secret missions) when ordered to do so by the President.
Additionally, the NSA (National Security Agency) gathers key electronic intelligence for use by the U.S. government in making national security decisions. The NSA monitors and decodes communications from all over the world, and protects the U.S.'s security and communications from spying by foreign powers.
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is one of the principal intelligence-gathering agencies of the United States federal government. The CIA's headquarters is in Langley, Virginia, a few miles west of Washington, D.C.[7] Its employees operate from U.S. embassies and many other locations around the world.[8][9] The only independent U.S. intelligence agency, it reports to the Director of National Intelligence.[10]
The CIA has three traditional principal activities, which are gathering information about foreign governments, corporations, and individuals; analysing that information, along with intelligence gathered by other U.S. intelligence agencies, in order to provide national security intelligence assessment to senior United States policy-makers; and, upon the request of the President of the United States, carrying out or overseeing covert activities and some tactical operations by its own employees, by members of the U.S. military, or by other partners.It can, for example, exert foreign political influence through its tactical divisions, such as the Special Activities Division.
