Disposition: impeached, in 1988, after he was convicted of obstructing an investigation into a death threat allegedly made by an aide. He also failed to report a $350,000 from a contributor to his campaign for Governor as required by campaign laws; loaned himself $80,000 of public money to help his failing car dealership; allegations of covering up a death threat by one of his appointees to a government employee. Was the first US Governor to face removal from office by three means simultaneously: impeachment by the legislature, a scheduled recall election, and a criminal indictment.

Disposition: March 2005, Arizona's Citizens Clean Elections Commission voted 5-0 to remove Smith from office because of a campaign finance violation. The commission’s order also directs Smith to return $34,625 in campaign funds and pay a $10,000 fine.

Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger "told a magazine in 1977 that he had a stripper girlfriend, hung out with prostitutes and engaged in group sex. Then in October 2003, the Los Angeles Times reported that several women said he had forced himself on them, grabbing them and trying to pull off clothing. … Schwarzenegger didn't admit anything specific, but he didn't exactly proclaim his innocence, either. "Wherever there is smoke, there is fire," he said. "I have behaved badly sometimes."

Investigation: Richard Delgaudio, served as president of the Republican-affiliated Legal Affairs Council, raising money for Oliver North’s defense during the Iran-Contra scandal, and for former Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger’s defense fund (back in the pre-Ashcroft/Gonzales days when Republican criminals were actually sometimes tried for their crimes). Investigation: Brian H. Darling, 39, legal counsel to Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) and former lobbyist for the Alexander Strategy admitted yesterday that he was the author of a memo citing the political advantage to Republicans of intervening in the case of Terri Schiavo, the senator said in an interview last night.

Disposition: offered his resignation and it was immediately accepted.

Investigation: Chris Hill, a Florida businessman, to whom the National Republican Congress Committee, or NRCC, awarded a “Republican of the Year Award”

Disposition: accepted a plea bargain, agreeing to 14 months in a minimum security prison camp at Elin Air Force Base in Florida, plus five years probation. Hill also suffered a $500,000 fine, along with the loss of his warehouse building and manufacturing equipment.

The NRCC rescinded the award after learning that Hill was facing federal charges related to drug paraphernalia.

Investigation: Mr. James K. Isenhour as owner and operator of the Silver Archer Foundation. Inspector General John M. Franco found that Isenhour took in about $400,000 from private companies. He sent an estimated $168,000 to a private school, but did not devote any of the money to private scholarships for low-income children as the law requires, Franco wrote.

Disposition: Franco to the FDLE on Tuesday. "We believe the misappropriation ... constitutes theft and a scheme to defraud."
