MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On January 17, Corbyn said that Britain should look for “some reasonable accommodation” with Argentina over the disputed islands.
“The biggest threat at the moment isn’t Argentina. Actually it is Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party, who seem determined to override the wishes of the islanders. That’s the immediate threat because Labour are the principal opposition and will be presumably fighting the next election on that basis,” Fallon told the BBC broadcaster.
He, nevertheless, confirmed the UK Defense Ministry’s commitment to invest 180 million pounds ($257 million) over the next 10 years to improve the islands’ infrastructure and strengthen the UK military presence.
Earlier on Wednesday, Fallon paid tribute to the British servicemen killed in the Falklands War, becoming the first defense secretary to visit the islands in over a decade.
Argentina claims that it inherited the Falkland Islands, located about 300 miles off the country’s east coast, after the state and the outlying territories gained independence from Spain. Buenos Aires calls the archipelago the Malvinas.
The territorial dispute with London led to a 74-day Falklands War in 1982, when Argentina invaded and briefly occupied the South Atlantic islands.
The nearly 3,000 local residents almost unanimously voted for the archipelago to remain an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom in March 2013.
