A political analyst says fresh sanctions by the United States and the European Union on Russia over the Ukraine crisis shows “utter hypocrisy” as they remain indifferent in the face of Israeli crimes in Gaza, Press TV reports.

In a recent interview with Press TV, Rodney Martin, a former US Congressional Staffer, said that the United States and the European Union slapped new sanctions on Moscow over its alleged role in the crisis in Ukraine while they do “absolutely nothing about Israeli ethnic cleansing in Gaza.”

The analyst added that placing bans on Russia is a “face-saving measure” adopted by the Western states to cover their actions in Ukraine, where they helped topple the government of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and brought a “puppet regime” to power.

“The real issue is this absolute hypocrisy where they are going at Russia for defending its geo-political interests while they do nothing while the US ally in Tel Aviv engages in ethnic cleansing in Gaza,” Martin stated.

On Wednesday, the Official Journal of the EU said the 28-nation-bloc had imposed fresh asset freezes and travel bans against some Russian nationals and firms over the situation in Ukraine.

The announcement came a day after US President Barack Obama said expanded sanctions, known as Phase 3, had been imposed on Moscow, affecting “key sectors of the Russian economy.”

Threats of sanctions intensified further after Malaysian flight MH17, heading from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was reportedly shot down over Ukraine’s volatile Donetsk region on July 17.

Western powers accuse pro-Russia forces of downing the civilian airliner. The pro-Russians deny any involvement in the tragedy.

Russia had earlier warned that the fresh wave of Western sanctions against Moscow could lead to higher energy prices for Europe.
