US will continue to work with Ukraine’s president-elect: Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry says Washington will continue to work with Ukraine’s president-elect Petro Poroshenko following his victory on Sunday’s election.
“The United States will continue to work with the people of Ukraine and the newly elected President to build on this victory for democracy. We will support their efforts to determine their own future in a more united, secure, independent, and prosperous Ukraine,” Kerry said on Monday.
According to preliminary results, nearly 60 percent of the voting public backed Poroshenko.
The top US diplomat once again condemned “Russia’s occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea.”
“The United States respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemns and rejects Russia’s occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea, and remains committed to working with Ukraine and other partners to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict,” Kerry said.
“The large turnout sends a clear message: the Ukrainian people want to live in a united, democratic and peaceful Ukraine anchored in European institutions,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama called the presidential election an “important step forward in the efforts of the Ukrainian government to unify the country.”
Obama said he looked forward to working with Poroshenko.
“On behalf of all Americans, I congratulate the people of Ukraine for making their voices heard by voting in their presidential election today,” Obama said in a statement.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also said on Monday that his country is willing to work with the newly elected government in Kiev.
