When will Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton get to debate in person?

Mrs Clinton's blistering attack on Mr Trump during the Democratic national convention was a sign of things to come.

She said: "Donald Trump can't even handle the rough-and-tumble of a presidential campaign. Imagine him in the Oval Office facing a real crisis.

“A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.”

Mr Trump hit back with a diatribe against Mrs Clinton on Twitter saying that she was unfit to run the country.

He said: "Our way of life is under threat by Radical Islam and Hillary Clinton cannot even bring herself to say the words.

“No one has worse judgement than Hillary Clinton - corruption and devastation follows her wherever she goes."

Given the animosity between the candidates, sparks are sure to fly when they meet each other face to face for the first election debate.

When will Donald Trump debate Hillary Clinton?

The bitter rival will take part in the first televised debate on Monday September 26 at Hofstra University on Long Island in New York.

The debate will run from 9pm to 10.30pm Eastern Time (ET) in the US but there is a five hour time difference with the UK.

The TV showdown will be shown between 2am and 3.30am in the early hours of Tuesday September 27 here in the UK.

The moderator, NBC anchor Lester Holt, is set to ask the candidates about America's Direction, Achieving Prosperity and Securing America.

Will Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton win the debate?

These are just three of the hot-button topics at the debate where half the questions come from Holt and half from the studio audience.

After each question the candidates will have two minutes to respond before getting the chance to discuss the topic more widely.

Hofstra University previously hosted two presidential debates featuring Mr Obama - first against John McCain in 2008 and then Mitt Romney in 2012.

Tonight's clash is the first of three prime-time TV debates in the run up to the US presidential election in November.
