Donald Trump defended his "America First" approach to foreign policy during a radio interview Friday.

Trump called into "The Savage Nation" show with Michael Savage and said he's not an isolationist as some have said.

"I'm not an isolationist but I don't want to do business if we're going to lose $500 billion," Trump said. "We have a trade deficit with China [of] $505 billion. It's got to be balanced. We're not looking for the end of the world but it's got to be balanced.

"I'm a person that wants fairness for our country and for our people and for our taxpayers, and we just can't continue to go on like this."

The interview came shortly after Trump spoke at the California Republican Convention, which was disrupted by protesters. Trump and his entourage were forced to make an alternate entrance into the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Burlingame, Calif., just south of San Francisco.

Regarding the United States' relationship with NATO, Trump reiterated his stance that he wants other member nations to start paying their fair share and the U.S. to contribute less money.

"In NATO, they have 28 nations. We can't be taken advantage of, with many of these nations getting protection not even paying what they're supposed to be paying us for agreement," Trump told Savage.

"All of that is going to stop and so many other things are going to stop. We're going to make great trade deals and we'll make our nation rich again."

Trump said he will next travel to Indiana, which will host its Republican primary next Tuesday. The latest polls show Trump leads his opponents in the state.

Regarding the remainder of the primary season, Trump said, "It's a lot of work but the end result is we're going to make America great again and we're going to make it maybe greater than ever before."

Trump gave a foreign policy speech Wednesday in which he criticized the current approach and outlined a new plan moving forward.
