Ex-Senator Wants to Cut Social Security Benefits

Republicans in Congress had tried to block the creation of the panel, arguing that it hurts those who have been paying into the programs for years and would like to get back what they have been promised. Since it wouldn’t pass Congress, the panel was created under a White House edict, bypassing debate in both the House and the Senate.

Democrat Erskine Bowles, a banker and former White House chief of staff in the Clinton administration, and Republican Alan Simpson, a retired senator from Wyoming, have been tapped to head the committee.

In an interview with a national newspaper, Simpson showed his disdain for working-class American families. “How did we get to a point in America where you get to a certain age in life, regardless of net worth or income, and you’re ‘entitled’?” Simpson asked. “The word itself is killing us.”

Well, Mr. Simpson, it could have something to do with the fact that the majority of Americans have already paid into the programs—taken from their salaries in the form of taxes to pay for them. Surely, taxpayers are more “entitled” to that money than Washington.

Simpson seems to have forgotten that, had these programs not been raided by Congress to pay for the ridiculous federal budgets concocted by both Republicans and Democrats, they would be solvent today.
