Countries can and do go broke.
At least one European country is currently teetering on the edge.
Iceland...a nice, friendly, hardworking, modern place that as recently as a year ago was super-prosperous.
What happened?
The bankers got to play unimpeded and they succeeded in destroying the place.
Odd thing: It was entirely predictable. In fact, it was predicted in accurate detail a year ago.
Why the financial crisis goes way beyond "sub prime" and is, sadly, probably only just getting warmed up for the real fireworks...
