That's directly due to Ike's size. Experts are trying to figure out when they've seen a storm this wide. Ike's tropical storm force winds stretch for 510 miles, and weather radar from Galveston to Key West can see its outer bands. That's about 70 percent larger than an average hurricane.

Hurricane IKE: From the National Hurricane Center 5 & 11am 9/11/08:

‘IKE CONTINUES TO EXHIBIT SOME UNUSUAL STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS.’

“RELATIVELY LITTLE

TRANSPORT OF WINDS ALOFT DOWN TO THE SURFACE. “

‘As a greater percentage of the momentum of this hurricane is ‘aloft’ and not at the surface, IKE WILL NOT SPIN DOWN as quickly as would a typical non-manipulated storm. This means that the downward transport of this energy will continue long after the hurricane makes landfall. The net result will be hurricane damage much, much farther inland than anyone is expecting. I can easily see weeks without power and utilities over a huge chunk of territory just to the right of the eye and for a great distance (compared to usual) inland. Look at Haiti now for what Houston and environs will present us in 5 days. The potential for ALL of Houston and the surrounding area to be shut-in for 45 days is not all unreasonable to consider.’
