Radioactive Leak Found, Fixed at Vt. Nuke Plant

Smaller Font Larger Font RSS 2.0

Plant spokesman Larry Smith said late Saturday that radioactive water and vapor leaked from a pipe in a pit that workers dug to find the source of an earlier leak. The latest leak involved 13 different radioactive isotopes.

Smith said the leak was stopped. Plant and federal regulatory officials said it poses no threat to public health or safety.

The 38-year-old plant in southeast Vermont previously leaked radioactive tritium. That leak was repaired. But in the cleanup work last week, Vermont Yankee officials announced they had found soil contaminated with strontium-90, a more potent radioactive isotope.

New Orleans-based Entergy Corp. owns the plant.
