Of course, the prison-industrial complex just loves behaviour like this, because it provides more slave labor for their business endeavors.
Last night, Mike and I volunteered for a food distribution program, sponsored by a couple of local churches. The queue was much longer than I have ever seen, and many of the people who were registered to participate in this program were much younger than I had ever seen before. We were lucky that the food set aside for the program didn't run out completely, because of the obvious increase in need in our local community.
If you CAN donate to any local food bank program in your community, faith-based or not, please do; it makes a world of difference for people and families (particularly kids) on the edge financially.

The official poverty measure is published by the United States Census Bureau and shows that: In 2010, 46.9 million people were in poverty, up from 37.3 million in 2007 -- the fourth consecutive annual increase in the number of people in poverty . This is the largest number in the 52 years for which poverty rates have been published (DeNavas-Walt 2011, p. 14).
