Mythbuster #3.. More than half the nation lives in counties protected by levees
October 1, 2009
Dear Patrick
FEMA has finally responded to a FOIA request Levees.org filed six months ago.
It turns out that the majority of the nation's population, 54.83% lives in counties protected by levees. That figure represents 156,615,630 people.
Manmade levees, like navigational channels, highways and dams are alterations to landscape, that if done irresponsibly can be devastating. This may be what happened in north Georgia.
This new data reaffirms the importance of understanding that levee failure and flooding is not a strictly New Orleans nor a coastal problem.
