A SURVIVAL PACK - The Priorities
A survival pack will be the most important thing you can have if you are caught in a natural or man-made disaster. Most people have the necessities for survival on hand in their homes and will be able to survive for a brief period of time without new supplies. But what if your home is in the disaster path and is destroyed? Or, what if they are caught away from home without the ability to get home? If you own and automobile and you drive to and from work or travel by bus, plane, ship, train, or truck you will want to consider the wisdom of keeping an emergency pack with you in the event of such an emergency. And it is a good idea to keep a second Survival Pack at home. A good Survival Pack should start with basic life sustaining items.. » read more
Earthquake Exposes Social Chasm in Chile
Anger is mounting in Chile over the inadequacy and indifference that have characterized the government’s response to the earthquake of February 27. Last Friday’s Wall Street Journal quoted Chilean sociologist Lucia Dammert, who said Chile was experiencing "a social earthquake" that had revealed “a fractured country, socially divided with a population that feels excluded…” Concepción, with more than half a million inhabitants, the second largest city in Chile, continues to be occupied by over 14,000 troops. On March 2, the state of siege imposed on Concepción and other cities was extended to two additional coastal towns, Curicó and Talca. On March 6, an 18-hour curfew in Concepción was lowered to 13 hours. While much is being made by the Chilean media of the “recovery” of looted items in Concepción and other cities by troops and police, the speed with which the government sent troops to occupy Concepción contrasts with the repeated delays in sending material aid.. » read more

Gaza's power plant to shut down amidst latest fuel crisis
Gaza - Ma'an - An EU contract paying for fuel shipments into the Gaza Strip for its sole power plant expired on 30 November 2009, according to Kan'an Obeid, deputy manager of the Energy Authority in the coastal enclave. While the EU had been providing the service after the contract expired, EU officials notified the Energy Authority that they would no longer pay for the fuel shipments unless the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah drafted a new agreement and payment scheme. Obeid said that the fuel in Gaza will last until Thursday morning. If a new shipment does not arrive, Gaza's power plant will be forced to shut down, in turn affecting 70 percent of the population. The Energy Authority is in talks with the finance minister in Ramallah to implement a payment plan whereby the Gaza Electricity Company will collect money from its customers, then transfer the funds to the minister, who would pay Israeli fuel companies for the service.. » read more
Haiti Is Open for Business
In December 1984, Canada's conservative prime minister, Brian Mulroney, told the New York Economic Club that "Canada is open for business," meaning US companies were welcome, the two countries would work for greater economic integration, America's sovereignty took precedence of his own, and corporate interests from both countries could operate freely at the expense of most Canadians. That's always been Haiti's curse, now more than ever. Under American militarized control, Haiti is occupied for profit, its pseudo government largely invisible, and predators aim to cash in to the fullest. On January 21, in his article titled, "Securing disaster in Haiti," Peter Hallward explained, saying: "... » read more

Army National Guard In Pittsburgh For Recovery Efforts
Hundreds of soldiers from the Army National Guard arrived in Pittsburgh on Sunday and are staying in the city indefinitely. More than anything, the city was in dire need of the humvees used by the National Guard, because the vehicles are able to go straight over the snow. A high volume of calls in the snow-covered city have paralyzed paramedics and other emergency rescue crews. The soldiers are stationed at Brashear High School in Beechview because of its large parking lot, gymnasium and close proximity to the armory a few blocks away.“This mission was approved by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agent, so we work hand-in-hand, several military relations there,” said Grey Berrier.. » read more
