When Sugar Creek, Mo. resident Toni “Bones” Shelton thought up a creative way to re-purpose some old tires, she thought she was helping the environment. The city’s municipal leaders, however, were not impressed and issued her a warning.

“I was just really interested in recycling and I’m really big on self-sufficiency,” Shelton said of the controversial tires she brightly repainted and turned into flower planters.

“They just said they needed to go,” Shelton told KCTV. “I told them I was going to be using them for planters in the spring and they informed me it wasn’t allowed.”

The city claims the tires represent a haven for mosquitoes and significantly lower the property values, not only of her home, but of those near it as well.

Sugar Creek Police Chief Herb Soule said the main issue the city has is not with the way she used the tires, but rather the number of tires.

Shelton partially complied by removing a majority of the tires and storing them in an old truck, but she hasn’t removed all of them because doing so, she says, would set the wrong example for her children.

“I don’t want my kids to see me back down and not follow my heart,” Shelton reportedly stated.

She’s also refusing to pay any type of fine because she doesn’t feel she’s done anything wrong. According to KCTV, she’s willing to do what it takes to keep the planters in place, even if that means going to jail.

“The case will be heard in municipal court in Sugar Creek next week,” KCTV reported, adding that her property “is not in violation of any municipal codes.”
