John Bunyan (1628-1688) was born in Elstow, England, and enjoyed decades of success as a writer and preacher. He was imprisoned more than a decade for preaching without a license, and it was in prison that he began and finished "The Pilgrim's Progress," one of the most famous allegories ever written. A Puritan, Bunyan wrote more than 60 influential works, including "The Life and Death of Mr. Badman" (1680). His grave is at Bunhill Fields in London.
