Trump Plans to Make NAFTA Better to Benefit US, Canada

President Donald Trump said Monday his White House will be "tweaking" the North American Free Trade Agreement to make it better for both the United States and its northern neighbor.
Trump repeatedly labeled the trade agreement a "disaster" during his presidential campaign. But during Monday's White House press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the president backed off from his harsh criticism.
"We have a very outstanding trade relationship with Canada. We'll be tweaking it, doing certain things that will benefit both our countries," Trump said.
"On the southern border, for many, many years, the transaction was not fair to the United States. An extremely unfair transaction. We're going to work with Mexico, make it a fair deal for both parties. I think we will get along very well with Mexico. They understand and we understand."
Trump then got into more specifics regarding Mexico, which included mentions of several car companies that have committed to building U.S. plants and/or adding American jobs as opposed to opening plants or expanding their presence in Mexico.
Trump closed the discussion, which began with a question from a Canadian reporter at the East Room event, by reaffirming his commitment to improving America's friendship with Canada.
"Our relationship with Canada is outstanding. We're going to work together to make it even better," Trump said.
