Jan. 10, 2016Americans need to apply pressure where “it actually matters” when they are fighting a social or cultural battle.

This from conservative author Dinesh D’Souza, whose projects have included “America: Imagine The World Without Her,” “2016: Obama’s America,” “God Forsaken,” “Roots of Obama’s Rage” and “What’s So Great About Christianity.”

He spoke recently to a conference on the topic of Costco’s decision more than a year ago to pull his new project, “America,” from its shelves and stop selling it.

And he included in his description how WND’s reporting on the Costco move played a role.

“The truth of it is we have far more influence than we realize,” he said.

The book issue developed when “somebody” from the Obama administration walked into a store and saw his book, and “realized the top brass are Democrat donors, buddies of Obama.”

The left, using the power it has, influenced the store to remove it.

“But a reporter found out about this and wrote an article in WorldNetDaily,” D’Souza continued. “It caused an eruption of outrage among their readers … .”

He described it as an “online mob” at WND.

But it was without enough influence “until someone on that site decided, ‘Why are we on WND? We should be discussing this on the Costco site.’”

Some 17,000 were among those objecting, he noted.

“These 17,000, to put it bluntly, destroyed the Costco website. They went into every item, you buy a pair of pants or a grill you click on that you would see a very fashionable lady cutting up her Costco executive membership card.”

The company immediately flew him to Seattle and an executive invited him in to his office, stating, “You are destroying Costco.”

“Me? I’m destroying a multibillion dollar corporation,” D’Souza said. “He made it very clear I was not only jeopardizing his job but the jobs of thousands of Costco employees.”

He continued, “What are we saying? A big business which has huge brand loyalty cannot survive the fury of 17,000 people applying concentrated power where it actually matters.”

He returned home.

“The moment I landed, Costco had reversed its decision.”

It was back in July 2014 when WND reported Costco Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti confirmed the wholesale giant has reversed its decision to remove D’Souza’s book, “America: Imagine the World Without Her," from its stores.

Galanti told WND that Costco's corporate headquarters in Issaquah, Washington, instructed local stores that had not yet returned the D’Souza book to the vendor to keep the remaining copies on the shelf.

And the book was reordered from publisher Regnery, he said.

“Frankly, because of all the hoo-rah, some Costco locations have sold more of D’Souza’s book today than they sold in the previous four weeks combined,” he said.

Galanti was referring to the outcry in response to WND's reporting that Costco had decided July 1 to remove the book "America" just as the companion movie of the same name was hitting theaters.

The book was No. 43 on Amazon.com's bestseller list when WND's first story broke and soon sat at the No. 1 spot overall.

“We are bringing it back, not for political reasons, but because the book is now selling well," Galanti told WND. "We didn’t pull the book on July 1 for political reasons, and we are not putting it back in the stores now for political reasons. We are doing this because we sell merchandise and D’Souza’s book is now selling well."

When Costco claimed the decision was based on poor sales, D'Souza said that just didn't make sense, as it was the No. 1 bestselling book on Amazon at the time.

Previously, Obama had visited a Costco store in a Washington, D.C., suburb, "proving," as Jaime Fuller of the Washington Post commented, "that his administration's romance with the second-largest retailer in America is stronger than ever – and might just be the most successful union of a politician and a supermarket in American history."
