US foreign policy in hands of ‘corporate oligarchs’

The United States’ foreign policy is not in the hands of the American people, but it’s dictated by “corporate oligarchs,” says Bruce Gagnon of Global Network Against Weapons.
“The popular rhetoric in the United States is that the American people in our democracy decides such things as foreign policy but in reality it is dictated by oligarchs that run our country, the corporate oligarchs – the oil corporations, the weapons industry, the pharmaceutical corporations,” Gagnon told Press TV on Sunday.
“The United States is an aggressive nation because the corporations want to take control of the client resources around the planet, they want to take control of agricultural production and turn it into a corporate program that benefits the corporations,” he said. “And they are using tools like NATO as their weapon of expansion.”
“So when President [Barack] Obama talks about things like working with allies, having a broad consensus and international consensus, what he really means by that is NATO,” he said. “NATO, the United States fully controls. And so NATO is the decision making military arm of US foreign policy.”
Obama is going to deliver a speech on Wednesday to defend his approach toward foreign policy. The president has been accused by rival groups of acting passively in this regard.
The US foreign policy has a “very ugly picture” and Obama has to sell it on Wednesday to the American people, Gagnon concluded.
