Police forces are recruiting from private security company G4S for £60,000 roles running murder and serious crime investigations in the latest privatisation of frontline posts.

Advertisements have been placed by G4S, the firm that could only partly fulfill its contract to supply security guards at Olympics, for civilian ‘senior investigating officers’ to work in UK police forces.

The job description, reported in the Sunday Times, said the role involved heading up serious crime inquiries, leading a team of officers conducting interviews, door-to-door inquiries and tests.

Candidates are expected to have experience of managing homicide or serious crime investigations in the past four years.

The use of private contractors in the police has been criticised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which deals with complaints made against the police.

Chairman of the IPCC Dame Anne Owers told the Sunday Times: ‘At present, contracted-out staff are under no obligation to co-operate with IPCC investigations.

‘We believe that this oversight reduces public confidence as it clearly can affect our ability to carry out thorough investigations.’

A G4S spokesman said: ‘G4S is a long-time advocate of proposals to extend the IPCC remit to cover all employees of contractors engaged by the police forces in England and Wales.

‘In 2010 we informed the IPCC we would voluntarily submit ourselves to any IPCC investigation if requested. This commitment still stands today.’

This week it was reported that 20 extra staff from G4S were being drafted in to help detectives investigating the Jimmy Savile sex scandal.

The firm will reportedly make £250,000 to hire staff to assist police dealing with ‘unprecedented workloads’ as a result of Operation Yewtree.

One of Jimmy Savile’s victims, Deborah Cogger, told The Sun that she is furious at the decision to hire G4S staff.

She said: ‘What will people G4S hire know about child abuse and paedophilia?

‘What qualifications do they have to handle sensitive material?’

Ex Met Police commander John O’Connor also branded the move ‘appalling’.

G4S hit the headlines after failing to fulfill its £240million contract with Locog to provide 10,400 security guards at the Olympic Park and other venues.
