Posted 8/9/08 We are so conditioned to accept the omnipresence of police we have never really considered that the entire construct of criminal justice as we understand it today did not exist during our nation’s founding era. While "surfing" the web on the subject of Blackwater and standing armies, a heavily-footnoted, 19,000-word research paper on cops and the Constitution came up. The following, which is an excerpted version of less than a quarter of the entire work, causes us to rethink our most deeply held beliefs about police, courts, crime and punishment. It also compels us to appreciate the fact that the cornerstone of a free society is the just and true nature of a self-policing populace and that, for our sins as negligent citizens, we have been raising and provisioning a standing army to oppress us for the last 170 years. Hassled for Carrying a Gun by Wyoming Police
August 9, 2008 A friend was visiting me from out of town. His concealed weapons permit did not have reciprocity with WYO, so he was open carrying. I was carrying concealed - though on several trips to Powell in the past, I have chosen to open carry. We stopped at a video store, then drove around the block and parked a couple of blocks away. July 19, 2008 Governments do not have what I call primary or originary rights. Only persons, taken one at a time, have these rights. In the words of Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." In Jefferson’s theory, Persons have unalienable Rights, to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. If a Government has what appears to be rights, these are powers that are lodged in that Government by a voluntary agreement by those who choose to associate themselves with that Government.. » read more
